Using MS Word in the Classroom

MS Word is a powerful word processing program that helps teachers create lessons, tests and letters. Students can use it for creative writing, basic reports or research papers. Learn the basics along with more advanced features such as inserting graphics, clip art, and spreadsheets, transforming text to html, and word art. Participants will plan a lesson activity incorporating the use of Word such as having students create bookmarks that persuade readers to read the book. Learn how to help students create newsletters and brochures, and how you can create easy to use worksheets with imbedded hyperlinks that can help support your students as they create their own projects.

Using MS Excel in the Classroom

Learn the basics of creating a spreadsheet, making a chart from your data, formatting a spreadsheet and printing all or parts of it during the first half of the class. Then, find out how to design spreadsheet assignments for your students that require them to enter data, apply formulas, and graph and chart their data, such as graphing probability from coin tosses. This technology tool is great for teaching about the different types of charts and graphs and how data can be manipulated to look one way or another. Using MS PowerPoint in the Classroom

Learn everything from the basics to the more advanced features that make PowerPoint a great tool for student learning. You will have the opportunity to create your own PowerPoint presentation for use in the classroom to introduce or clarify a lesson. Learn how to create photo albums, adventure stories, and Jeopardy games. During the second half of the class, learn how to design student PowerPoint assignments that require higher order thinking skills, such as a poetry analysis presentation, and examine assessment methods that will help you grade these student assignments. This class helps school leaders turn their regular classroom observations into "power walkthroughs" by using a PDA, Tablet PC, Blackberry, or iPhone handhelo device loaded with McREL’s Web-based software. In just a three- to five-minute visit, observers can gauge instructional strategies, student engagement, and use of technology. Through practical, hands-on guidance, administrators learn how to use the Power Walkthrough software on their handheld devices to capture important data during each classroom visit. Participants leave the training session ready to conduct power walkthroughs in their own schools on the very next day.

Movie-Making in the Classroom: Creating Digital Stories and Photo Essays

Wondering if movie-making is too difficult? This class is for you! Help your students create their own digital stories by experiencing the process yourself. This three-day workshop teaches the pre-production, production and post-production phases of movie making. You will have an opportunity to choose one of three easy software programs to use: Windows MovieMaker (PC), iMovie (Mac), or PhotoStory 3 (PC). The class is a cross between a writer’s workshop and a movie-making symposium. Bring a story to share, or select from one of the stories provided. Participants will walk away with their own 3-5 minute movie and lots of ideas about how to help students create one.

What dangers lurk online for our children? We teach them how to be safe within the physical community, but what about safety in the cyber community? Learn the Internet Safety concepts of:

Do students know how to validate information found on the Web? Too often, information published on the Internet is viewed as truth, but is it really? Also, what about copyright? Do students have the legal right to copy and paste information from a website into their multi-media presentations and/or their own documents and websites? In addition to Internet Safety, learn the new grammar of the Web and how to:

  • Read URL web addresses to find their hidden meaning
  • Locate owners of websites
  • Evaluate the validity of a website
  • Investigate fair use as it applies to student-created digital documents

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the iSAFE curriculum and the modules available to them in the classroom. They will create model lessons for their students that teach Internet Safety, Literacy, and Intellectual Property/Copyright.

Wiki Your Way to a Classroom Website

Come learn how to use this free, Web 2.0 tool to create quick websites that contain everything you are dreaming of. In no time at all, you will have a robust website that you will be proud of and others will be impressed with. Learn the benefits of using wikis and see several examples of how they are being used in education. Participants will create their own wikis using pbwiki (a free Internet-based service) and learn basics such as setting one up, adding pages, inserting links, uploading files, inserting images and adding tables. Brought to you by the producers of the Google Teacher Academy, this class is a Google Workshop for Educators (GWE). It will introduce participants to innovative ways Google tools can be used in education. This full day of fast-paced presentations and hands-on activities includes experience with advanced search techniques, collaborative web-based applications, and inspirational instructional strategies. Google Certified Teachers share ways they've implemented tools such as Google Docs, Google Earth, Google Sites, and more. Participants who complete the event are given access to the Google Workshops for Educators Network (GWEN), an online community focused on supporting educators as they learn more about the power of Google to drive student learning.

Promoting Student Inquiry Using WebQuests

A WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented activity in which most or all of the information used by learners is drawn from the Web. WebQuests are designed to use learners' time well, to focus on using information rather than looking for it, and to support learners' thinking at the levels of analysis, synthesis and evaluation. The model was developed in early 1995 at San Diego State University by Bernie Dodge with Tom March. In this class, you will learn:

  • The difference between short and long term WebQuests
  • The critical attributes of a WebQuest
  • The thinking skills necessary to complete a WebQuest
  • The forms WebQuests take
  • The steps in a WebQuest
  • The evaluation of WebQuests

Participants experience a WebQuest as students and then will be guided to Internet sites that help them locate existing WebQuests that can be used in the classroom. Finally, with the instructor's help, they will begin working on evaluating WebQuests for use in their classrooms.
PREREQUISITE: Participants must have basic computer skills--know how to save, cut, copy, and paste; navigate the menu bar; open and close windows; and be able to use a browser to access the Internet.

Evaluating Student Work with Differentiated Scoring

What does a good scoring guide look like? How do you create formative and summative assessments for use in today’s classrooms or for use with student created multi-media projects? Learn how to create rubrics, scoring guides, checklists, and other forms of assessments for and of learning that truly measure what students have learned. Find out how to develop holistic and analytic scoring guides for your specific instructional needs. In addition, take a look at how to use these assessments to differentiate instruction. Models will be shown, and online access to information about scoring guides will be given. Participants will have an opportunity to create their own scoring guides and have them critiqued by their peers and the teacher.

In this class, teachers will learn about the basics of using digital cameras and photography in the classroom. Come learn the parts of the camera, its basic operation, and possible activities that you can use with your students. Find out what can be done with digital images—how they can be enhanced, manipulated, and changed using basic photo editing software. Gain information about how to integrate images into lesson plans and classroom activities. Participants will be encouraged to develop a lesson that incorporates the use of digital images. Teaching Students about Charts & Graphs (Featuring MS Excel 2007)

Take your skill level a notch higher and learn how to have students gather and organize data, create a spreadsheet and then analyze it to solve problems and make decisions. Charts, graphs, and pictographs are all easily made with a spreadsheet like MS Excel, and you will learn how to design lessons that make use of these tools in the classroom. Advanced features of Excel will be taught. Bring a unit or lesson with you that requires students to gather data, and you will be able to include using a spreadsheet in no time.

Empowering Students with Podcasting

Come find out what all the talk is about! You don’t have to own an iPod or even a MP3 player to create and listen to your own podcasts. Learn how to record digital audio broadcasts, edit them and upload them to the web. Teachers can use this new technology to create podcasts of their lectures and class discussions so that students can listen to them again for reinforcement, or, students who were absent can catch up on work missed. Participants will also create lessons for their students that require them to create their own radio broadcasts, performances, interviews and more. Using iPhoto in the Classroom

In this half-day course, you'll learn how iPhoto automatically organizes your picture library by Events, based on dates the photo was taken.
