Welcome
to the 1860’s! This was a time when the
United States was divided into two sides, the North and the South. This was a time period filled with much
confusion, anger, and loyalty, while most people were just wondering
“why”. In 1857, James Buchanan was
elected President of the United States.
His term lasted until 1861 when a man by the name of Abe Lincoln took
over the seat as president and endured the long and tiring battle of the Civil
War. This war wasn’t just hard on the
President; it was hard on everyone who lived in the United States during the
1860’s. Many families were ripped apart because of the war; many families lost
loved ones, their homes and all of their belongings. The Civil War was a
relatively dark moment for the United States, probably one of the darkest of
all time.
At the beginning of 1861, the South began seceding from the
Union. It was a particularly bad time for the Union when the South left,
but a good time for the Confederates because the government was extremely weak
from the Buchanan administration. When the War was finished many people
throughout the nation wondered, "What is lost? What is won?”
It was an incredibly hard time period for many Americans and as you research
this era of the 1860's, you will find this out.
