Preconference Workshops, Monday, February 4, 2008
Session times are 9:00 am to 4:00 pm unless stated differently. Enrollment for most workshops is limited to 25-30. Preconference locations will be given in your confirmation letter.

Designed for K-12 educators, METC 2008 has designated three presentation levels to make our educational technology workshops count for your teaching and learning experience which are: Awareness (exploring and gathering), Training (developing new skill sets), Systemic (systemic change agent).

Practicing Web 2.0 (half-day 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.)

What is Web 2.0? Why is it different from the original Web? What are the foundational concepts that allow people to connect through the content, to create dynamic and adaptive networks for learning? This workshop, designed for tech-savvy educators, will introduce the basics of Web 2.0 technologies, a sampling of its tools, and its relevance to learning environments. Participants will explore together some potent opportunities for implementing these new tools for teacher staff development, digital resource production, and school management. This workshop is often podcast for later reference.

Perhaps more than anything else, Web 2.0 is about conversations, and conversations do not happen exclusively online. In 2008, METC will offer an EduBloggerCon - a self-structured conversation among Web 2 leaders, practictioners and newbies, across the entire range of education professionals. The aim will be to grow everyone's knowledge of emerging web technologies and to respect and leverage the experience and insights of all participants. This workshop will also be podcast for later reference and enjoyment.

Using Images for Educational Impact - Digital Images, Picasa, and Photo Story (Windows only)

Moving your digital images from your camera or hard drive into engaging, meaningful educational tools and resources for you and your students will be a major emphasis of the workshop. Start with slightly crooked, poorly colored or perfect images and use FREE tools like Picasa and Photo Story to create images worth remembering. This full day workshop will include editing photos with Picasa, organizing photos, using photos in PowerPoint, using Blogger to share photos, and creating multimedia presentations with Photo Story.

Digital Story Telling” with Photography, Editing and More

Participants will experience how digital photography can be integrated into the classroom curriculum and learn how to use Adobe Photoshop Elements effectively as an instructional tool.
First step, learn the hows and whys of the engaging use of digital cameras in your classroom. Bring your digital camera and learn great camera tips and tricks such as action-shots, low light, macro and more.
Second step, learn how to use Adobe Photoshop Elements effectively as an instructional tool, and experience how digital photography can be integrated into the classroom curriculum. Elements offers the broad functionality of Photoshop in a user-friendly environment. With its easy effects and filters, it is the perfect program to edit your digital camera and/or Web images.
Finally, develop a digital story using Microsoft Photo Story 3. The program allows you to use written, oral and visual communication all at one time to present material. This program can be done on any standard Windows computer. Bring your USB/flash drive to save your Digital Story and share with others.

Virtual Learning Environments new to you? Ready to take the plunge into blogs, wikis and other Web 2.0 tools? Then, learn how Moodle can support traditional instruction with collaborative tools. You will be provided free access to your own virtual classroom for a year. Bring your class list with you, so you can get your virtual classroom up and running!

Engage, Motivate and Inspire Using a SMART Board (Beginner)

In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn the basic functions of the SMART Board; design activities and lessons for existing subject area curriculum using the whiteboard in an interactive environment and learn how to utilize the SMART Notebook to create lessons.

This workshop goes beyond the use of the basic annotation tools to incorporate advanced features into your student learning activities. Photo Sharing with Flickr in the K-12 Classroom

Flickr is a photo sharing website that allows people to upload, organize and share their photographs. Participants will learn how to use Flickr and ways in which it can be used in the K-12 classroom. This workshop includes an introduction to Flickr, how to start a Flickr page for importing and organizing photos, and a discussion of the social networking features of Flickr such as notes, tags and groups. Participants will create a Flickr page and will begin using their accounts to create Flickr-based activities/projects for their classrooms.

Enhancing Learning Using Audio (half-day 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.)

Audio can be a powerful enhancement to all disciplines. Learn how to use iPods to deliver content with Mogopo, to expand the foreign language curriculum beyond the classroom with audio blogs and Voicethread, to make audio flashcards for vocabulary, to capture anything on your screen and add audio description, and to prepare audio tours with PowerPoint and Lec Share or Profcast.

Do You Hear What I Hear? Audacity Audio Software

Learn how to edit audio using Audacity, a FREE, downloadable application. Participants will learn how to convert tapes and CDs into digital files for manipulation in Audacity, learn recording techniques and actually record their own audio, and then edit into a final product. A variety of activities will be shown to take back to the classroom.

Audio Podcasting - the Whole Nine Yards

From concept to final product, experience the creation of an audio podcast for a world-wide audience. In just one day, participants will be involved in the entire process - working and learning about what is involved in the classroom for both the teacher and the students.

Hands On Learning with Clay Animation

Bring your digital camera with its USB cable and be prepared for a day of creativity and fun! Using a clay animation kit and Frames software from Tech4Learning, participants will create clay figures, take pictures and create movies. Clay animation can be used as content on web sites, a prop for a speech, a multimedia story, or a concept demonstration. Bring lesson ideas to build a clay animation around.

Oh, the Places We'll Go...Teaching with Google Earth

Google Earth is an excellent tool for schools to teach all content areas, as well as imbed videos and images from unitedstreaming to further enhance these areas! Examples of practical uses include: Earth Science: mountains, volcanos, glaciers, weather patterns; History: visit the sites of famous battles; Literature: visit the sites of famous novels, settings and authors; Math: measure distances and areas, study angles and intersecting lines; World languages: visit the landmarks and cities of foreign countries; Geography: see the cities, countries and geographic features of the works; Civics: learn about the layout and businesses of your hometown. This workshop will enhance your curriculum with good uses of Google Earth for your classroom.

iLife '08 and iWork '08 in Education

Nothing engages students in learning like Apple's newest suites of media authoring and productivity tools, iLife '08 and iWork '08. With iLife '08, including iMovie, iPhoto, GarageBand, iWeb and iDVD, students can easily and creatively demonstrate what they've learned through movies, images, music, podcasts and web sites. iWork '08, including Pages, Keynote, and a brand new spreadsheet application called Numbers, provides next-generation productivity tools for students and teachers. You'll have an opportunity in this session to explore, hands-on, all of these applications, as well as discuss how they can be utilized in the classroom.

This workshop will provide participants with an introduction to web-based resources and lessons available for math educators, as well as ways to integrate internet-based activities into their classroom for the more net-savvy. or project that promotes collaboration and technology integration into the
mathematic’s curriculum.

Come see how Palm handheld computers are being used in the classroom to support the math curriculum in elementary and middle school. This workshop will feature a hands-on look at a variety of free and commercial software applications, as well as lesson plans you can put to immediate use. We'll look at math mini-movies, math fact practice programs, flashcards, math ebooks, graphing calculations, equation solvers, spreadsheets, assessment tools and more.

Calculator-Based Laboratory Equipment to Teach Math & Science (grade 6-12)

Graphing calculators and calculator-based laboratory (CBL) equipment are great tools for teaching integrated math and science. This introductory workshop covers the basics of using Texas Instruments calculators and Vernier probeware. Participants learn to use CBL to explore a variety of math and science topics. Labs and activities are designed for students of all abilities and complement the National Science Standards.

Come learn how to use multimedia resources on handhelds to differentiate instruction for elementary and middle school students. We’ll look at a variety of curriculum areas, standards, and lesson plans, including ones in language arts, math, social studies, and science. You’ll visit a variety of places to download your own free, ready-to-use resources and also learn how to create your own using free software.

Get great tips and tricks for taking better photographs. Explore settings on your camera and learn how to alter your digital images, formats and compression. Create a one-page newsletter, develop the masthead, setup columns, add digital photos and advertisements using MS Word. Translate your newsletter into a podcast using GarageBand. (Bring your digital camera to the workshop if you have one.)

Combine Cyber and Real World Learning

How do you motivate children to learn virtually and face to face? First, engage students within a community online where they can feel safe, relate to role models and build skills and knowledge at their own pace. Second, keep students motivated by introducing a hands-on component. This workshop will review an educational framework that combines the best of both worlds while introducing children to 21st Century Skills, better preparing them for the workforce of tomorrow. Using Zoey’s Room, participants will complete one full beginner Engineering Tec-Trek: Mavis the Mobot and leave with an understanding of how to integrate 21st Century skills into informal activities in science, technology, engineering and math.

Changes in the media environment are altering our understanding of literacy and requiring new ways of processing culture and interacting with the world around us. MIT's New Media Literacies Project believes that these new media literacies need to inform all aspects of the educational curriculum. In this workshop, participants will watch a video and participate in an informal activity of one of the best practices that have emerged and how these media literacies can be used to impact a learner’s moral, intellectual, social, and cultural development. Participants will leave with an understanding of the new media literacies and tools to use to integrate these literacies across the curriculum.

Second Life: Bringing the Classroom to Life (grades 9-12+)

Virtual environments are at the forefront of the technological landscape, yet few know how to effectively use them in the classroom. Learn how "Massive Multi-User Online Role Playing Environments" can be used to capture the imaginations of the Net Generation. This workshop will introduce and offer an overview of Second Life, discuss technical aspects and requirements and demonstrate how Dr. Carter is currently using the environment in high school composition and literature classes.
