Dr. Larry BuchananTech Savvy Superintendent of the Year - Seven Secrets to Success
Presented by: Dr. Larry Buchanan, Superintendent, Grant Joint Union High School District, Sacramento, CA

Looking for the “Holy Grail” of education (individualized technology-based instruction)? Dr. Larry Buchanan will share his vision and innovative program that propelled his district to success.

Dr. Buchanan, a former eSchool News Tech Savvy Superintendent of the Year award winner, is pioneering an outstanding district-wide technology program that increases student achievement, reduces teacher workload, integrates new technologies, and ensures equitable access to educational resources.

As superintendent, Dr. Buchanan believes interactivity is the key to education in the 21st century. The right combination of technology tools improves learning and behavior because it thoroughly engages students. In addition, he has focused on building a strong network and ensuring that the bandwidth exists to fully integrate all of the districts’ curriculum-based systems. The interactive technology-based classrooms have allowed the Grant District teachers to teach to the standards while altering their delivery models to meet individual students’ needs.

Session Overview
I. Curriculum Development & Assessment - How technology assists in the daunting tasks of aligning curriculum to state and district standards.
II. Professional Development - How to create a program that uses technology to enhance, organize, deliver, manage, and present Professional Development for administrators, staff and teachers.
III. Strategic Planning - How to focus on what is necessary for long range budget planning, facilities planning, and all other areas in a school district. Districts must have their technology infrastructure funded, built, and delivered on time to make a difference in a coherent manner.
IV. Technology Infrastructure - How to develop a conceptual design for building infrastructure: technology standards, network, bandwidth, switches, etc.
V. Policies & Decision Making - How to approach and implement technology in a timely and cost-effective manner to meet the needs of the students…not the staff.

Distributing Student Data Effectively with Low Cost
presented by Dr. Robert Malito, Superintendent, Sharon Hennessy, Information Systems Manager, and Kathy Blackmore, Director of Instructional Technology, Parkway School District, St. Louis, MO

Parkway School District will briefly demonstrate how they have implemented a district wide reporting data warehouse for student data and student assessment scores. Standardized reporting against one central data warehouse allows administration, curriculum coordinators and teachers to assess and deploy enhanced curriculum and programs to target specific needs of students. Using Microsoft Business Intelligence SQL 2005, Integration Services and Reporting Services, Parkway has implemented a low cost solution to meet the high value demand for access to student data. As a result of this solution, teachers can get the right student data, in the right format, at the right time to make a positive impact on the student’s education.

METC encourages board members and administrators to attend the whole conference day and see and hear teachers sharing their best practices using technology.
